IN June 1863 general Robert E.Lee began the invasion of the North. Gettysburg remains the greatest battle fought on the American soil. It has become one of the symbols of the American history. Like Antietam the year before it led to a tactical stalemate. The odds always were against Lee, preventing him to achieve that annihilation battle he desperately sought throughout the war. Even if he had been succesful his casualties would have precluded him to seize Washington. Nevertheless the scale and heroism shown in this great battle have gone down the history of the American Civil War to symbolise its turning point.
