With the end of World War I and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Imperial Germany ceased to exist and the Weimar Republic was born. In 1933, the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) won the elections and the Third Reich began.
Two years later, the Treaty of Versailles was repudiated by Hitler’s government, and the Reichswehr became the Wehrmacht, consisting of the Army (Heer), the Navy (Kriegsmarine), and later an Air Force, the Luftwaffe.
Although the birth of the Luftwaffe was officially announced in 1935, in reality Germany had begun preparing and organizing its wartime aviation before the Nazi Party came to power.
When the Luftwaffe was officially born, the command was given to Hermann Göring.
Let us see, then, how it was possible for a defeated nation to create in a short time a powerful and feared air force, and by what means it dominated the skies of Central Europe before suffering the heavy defeats in the skies over England, largely due to the lack of large planes suitable for long-range bombing and fighters with sufficient range to protect them adequately.
